My Opinion: The Fault in Our Stars

Before I start, I just want to say DO NOT hate on me. This is just my opinion and everyone has the right to their own opinion.

With that being said, you might have already guessed that I have something bad to say about it.

There was a period of time, somewhere around June 2013, when everyone was raving about this book and instagramming the book in their photos. I clearly remember I was travelling back home from a family vacay and happened to go into the bookstore at the transit lounge and saw this book and thought, "hmmm if everyone is raving about this book so much, it must be really good!" and so I got it and read it on the flight back.

I must say, it was sad and touching BUT to be honest, I could already predict the ending before even getting halfway through the book and I am one who likes suspense and does not consider a story to be good unless I cannot predict the ending. Okay, yes, I agree that my standards of a "good story" may be too high, but as I said that's just me. Maybe some might say they could not predict the ending. Well, that's great. I don't know why I could predict it - maybe I've just watched way too many movies.

I did though like the way it was written, especially the eulogy for (spoiler!) Augustus Waters. So, overall, I was pretty satisfied with the book.

And then, soon after, they announced there was going to be a movie version and that the writer himself, John Green, would be on set helping the director to picture exactly what he had in mind when he wrote the story. So, I thought the movie would have a twist to it, that I was in for a surprise. I just figured since everyone had read the book, Green would change it up a little for the fans (like what happened for The Sister's Keeper) but no. I watched the movie and guess what? It's exactly the same story line as the book. Same dialogues. Same eulogy. I knew what was going to happen after every scene.

So, if you have not read the book, then yes, you may enjoy the movie as there will still be a surprise element present. Just not in my case since I read the book first.

Overall, I liked the book but did not enjoy the movie and wished there would have been something different from the book and think it was all a little overrated.
